This is a rare example of the outstanding Madonna and Child bust by Viktor Schreckengost, the renowned Cowan Pottery artist.
A similar piece is pictured in Mark Bassett and Victoria Naumann's book Cowan Pottery and the Cleveland School (see page 194, plate 591). Very few of these were made by Cowan. Less than 5 are known.
This example was made a bit later and is marked twice with a green ink stamp of Ohio with O.R.P.U. Inc. Unit #5 E Liverpool USA in each. This mark is attributed to Ohio Relief Production Units with an associated date of about 1934.
There does not seem to be damage or repair to the piece, but an area that appears to have been a kiln kiss or excess glaze has been ground smooth at the very top of the piece. 8 3/4" tall by 6 3/4" wide. There are also a few very tiny nicks on the back side of the top edge.
I'm Mark Bassett, author and collector. For years, I sold here under the name "potterybooks."
I recommend the groups Cowan Pottery Collectors and Pottery Collector on Facebook. Great place for beginners and advanced collectors to mingle and learn more about Cowan and other art pottery.
